Points of Interest: Gloucester County, VA

Gloucester Courthouse green, with old Debtor's Jail, Colonial Courthouse (circa 1766) Confederate monument, other buildings are focal point of the Court House Historic District.

Historic Rosewell, started in 1725, was one of the finest mansions built in the colonies. Ravaged by a fire in 1916, the ruins are now being stabilized and preserved by the Rosewell Foundation. Visitor Center with exhibit hall, gift shop and archeology lab are open daily. (804) 693-3215.
Three of America's oldest churches, Ware (circa 1690), top, Bethel Baptist, middle, and Abingdon, bottom, serve Episcopal parishes dating to 1650.

Restored birthplace of Dr. Walter Reed, "Conquerer of Yellow Fever" is maintained by Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA), is open during Garden Week and on other special occasions. Groups can arrange tours by emailing catesby@mindspring.com.
